Getting Started

So you bought your first yoyo, yay! The video on this page has some of the basics to get started, but before you do anything, please read the Need to Know section below.

Need to Know: How to get the best out of your yoyo and prevent it from breaking

Yoyos are not indestructible, but with proper care, they can last a long time. Please try to avoid twisting apart the yoyo halves. Use a toothpick to lift up string snags (knots) that get stuck inside the yoyo. Wooden yoyos can’t twist apart at all.

If you have to open the yoyo, be very careful when screwing the two halves back together. Align the halves exactly so the sides are parallel. Gently turn one half. If it doesn't turn easily, it might not be aligned correctly. It should turn easily until it reaches the end of the screw. If the axle or screw is completely removed from the yoyo, ensure it is put back facing the same way it was before. Twist until it feels nice and snug, but be careful not to twist too far, as the axle thread can strip if it is forced, and the yoyo will be broken. This is the most common cause of breaking the yoyo.

Play over soft surfaces such as carpet or grass. The yoyo will hit the ground occasionally. Tiles, concrete or paving will seriously damage it and cause dings and scratches. Sometimes it can even completely break the yoyo.
